The Situationship Field Guide: Red Flags, Green Flags, and Everything Beige

because 'we're just seeing where it goes' has now been going for eight months

A situationship is what happens when two people agree to date without agreeing to say so out loud. It lives in the space between talking stage and relationship, sustained entirely by vibes, plausible deniability, and one person quietly hoping the other will define it first. If you have ever typed and deleted the words 'so what are we,' congratulations. You have field experience. This guide is for you.

First, the red flags, and we mean the classics. They only text after 10 p.m. Their weekend plans are a state secret. You have met exactly zero of their friends, but they know your entire roster because you are a normal person who talks about your life. When you bring up the future, even something as small as a concert next month, they respond like you proposed marriage on the jumbotron.

Then there are the green flags, which get talked about way less because they are boring in the best way. They text back like a person who wants to. They remember the small stuff, like your coworker's name and the fact that you hate cilantro. They make plans in daylight hours. They say things like 'when you meet my sister,' casually, as if the future is a place you are both obviously going.

But the truly confusing zone is the beige flags, the behaviors that could mean anything: 1. They like every story you post but never reply to one. 2. They call you 'dude' affectionately, possibly romantically, unclear. 3. They said 'let's keep it chill' but also planned a whole day trip. 4. Their phone wallpaper is still the factory default mountain. None of these are crimes. All of them are data.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about situationships: the ambiguity is usually not an accident. Vagueness is a decision that gets made one dodged conversation at a time. If someone wanted the label, you would generally know, because labels are not actually that hard. People commit to fantasy football leagues with more paperwork than some of these arrangements.

That said, not every situationship is a tragedy. Some people genuinely need the slow lane, and two consenting adults enjoying an undefined thing is a valid Tuesday. The problem is not the missing label. The problem is when one person is reading the same situation as a rough draft of forever and the other is reading it as a free trial they never plan to pay for.

So here is the move, and it is painfully simple: ask. Not with a monologue, not with a curated Pinterest board of your future, just a plain question about whether you are both building toward something. The answer might sting. But a clear no is a gift compared to another six months of decoding their emoji usage like it is an ancient scroll. You deserve a yes that does not require forensics.
